Find the Greek Island That Suits You Best

by

Greece, despite its small size, has one of the largest coastlines in the world, thanks to its many islands. Its coastline exceeds 15,000 km and ranks 9th in the world of countries with the longest coastlines. Given that Greece does not have a large area (130,800 sq. Km.), from almost wherever you start, in a maximum of 1.5 hours you can be relaxing on a beach. The Greek territory includes 6,000 islands and islets scattered in the Aegean and Ionian seas, of which 227 are inhabited. This is a unique phenomenon in the European continent.

Every year, summer vacation enthusiasts re-enter the process of searching for the next destination that will host them. Each Greek island in itself is a separate universe.  At this point, we should point out that now the accessibility even to the most remote islands is easy and fast. Now the chartered flights and the fast speedboats compose the map of fast travel in Greece.

For us at Athens Insiders, discovering the ideal island for each traveller is the true challenge, since we are asked to choose among 6,000 islands, nothing that each of these islands hides its secrets and history.

For the Jet-Setters

Mykonos, while in the past was a stop for visitors to go to Delos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, now the terms have been reversed and it has become the focus of the Cyclades. Mykonos has a variety of haute couture clothing in stores that remain open until late at night. Apart from designer brands, the island of winds with its endless energy, Cycladic colors, is a place where lifestyle blends with tranquility, and where exclusive parties have a cosmopolitan yet bohemian flair.

For the Outdoorsy Types

In Icaria, visitors can find everything from lush forests to hidden beaches with coves and bays. Activities such as mountaineering, hiking, and cycling are popular thanks to the network of mountain trails, which lead travelers to magnificent settings with lakes and forests.

For Families

Naxos is the favorite island of families. It has beautiful and shallow beaches, impressive temples, and pleasant routes through old picturesque villages.

For Foodies

Those who travel to Crete should try the traditional Dako, as well as products that are famous for their quality and taste, such as tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, cheeses, and wine. Crete is a true gastronomical paradise with hospitable fishing villages such as Sisi, offering amazing delights straight from the Cretan cuisine.

For Art Lovers

Art lovers will discover their paradise in Hydra, as the island has famous galleries located in the narrow streets of the island. Art collectors and artists visit the island every year to admire the facilities of the Greek Cypriot billionaire and collector Dakis Joannou. Finally, as Hydra is the muse of many artists, the old slaughterhouse of the island is a field of action of artistic events.

For Party Animals

Ios is known for its vibrant nightlife. It is a magnet for young people as it has countless bars and clubs, which are on the streets of the island. Ios may have a large number of impressive beaches – busy or not, organized or not – as well as special attractions and stunning views. However, the nightlife is what makes it stand out from the other islands, as it is suitable for fun until the early morning hours!

For Love Birds

Santorini is “drowned” by tourists every year, however, it has one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. Couples have the opportunity to enjoy a glass of local wine at the top of the hill in Oia admiring the impeccable view of the Aegean Sea. Tip: For ultimate privacy, and to escape the crowds, all you need to do is to go to Pyrgos, the most well-preserved settlement on the island.

Anafi may not be the first island that would come to your mind; however, it is more than suitable for those seeking to rekindle their love. Large, beautiful beaches, impressive spots overlooking the sunset, traditional and high-quality flavors, are what make this tiny island a romantic heaven.

For the Windsurfers

Apart from being the best island in Europe for 2020, according to the travel magazine “Travel + Leisure“, Paros is a destination that combines everything – natural beauty, authentic experiences, nightlife, gastronomy, activities, archeological sites, even “mountainous” Mediterranean villages. It has Cycladic beauty, with picturesque alleys and whitewashed houses, while its beaches are suitable for all tastes. However, the weather of Paros attracts a specific group of people, windsurfers. They love to gather on various beaches of the island to enjoy their favorite sport and of course to show off with their outstanding tricks!

Athens Insiders’ Team of Experienced Travel Designers are happy to share their expertise and to design truly personalized itineraries for travellers who seek an Authentic Greek Experience.
